What is Keurig 2.0?

The Keurig 2.0 is a brewing system with K-Cup pod scanning technology that resists the use of unlicensed Keurig pods. hand.

You can adjust the coffee brewing temperature for optimal extraction and you can also change the strength with which it is brewed.

Why did Keurig introduce the 2.0 trial system?

Keurig is gaining popularity for making great coffee makers, but this growing popularity is prompting many companies to make unlicensed K-cup pods. However, licensing was not an issue, as the K-Cup's patent expired many years ago.

More and more companies are selling third-party K-Pods, which are now becoming the standard for coffee pods: K-Cup pods.

The patent for Keurig pods wasHe finished inSeptember 2012and the growing market for non-Keurig K-Cup pods has raised concerns about Keurig's future economic structure.

To maintain a monopoly on Keurig's used coffee pods, the company launched itsKeurig 2.0 brewing process in fall 2014.

Keurig 2.0 Brewing Systems only work with licensed K-Cups made by Keurig.

How does the Keurig 2.0 work?

The working principle of the Keurig 2.0 is quite different from other classic Keurig models, the machine has a lot of work and it all starts with scanning the lid of the K-Cup pods.

The Keurig 2.0 Brew System scans the pod lid and determines how much water is needed and the ideal brew temperature.

Brewing 2.0 systems work by detecting whether or not Keurig licenses the K-Cup. This required the use of digital rights management computer chips to read the infrared print on the capsule lid and then allow the machine to continue brewing.

Keurig 2.0 will not work until you check the authorization criteria on the pod label. In fact, devices with 2.0 technology cannot work with K-Cup pods that are not 2.0 compatible.

What is Keurig 1.0?

Keurig 1.0 are the original Keurig classic models that work with any type of K-Cup pod.

Many coffee lovers like Keurig 1.0 brewers for their simplicity and ability to brew coffee with third-party K-Cup pods.

These templates are very easy to use. Simply place the capsule in the machine and select the drink size and your drink will be ready in 1-2 minutes.

Since the Keurig 2.0 series is being discontinued, all Keurig models now on the market are part of the original Keurig 1.0 manufacturing system.

Perfect 1.0 vs. perfect 2.0

As mentioned, with a simple explanation of where the stories of the Keurig 1.0 and Keurig 2.0 began.

The Keurig 2.0 originally featured new scanning technology that resisted brewing with unlicensed K-cups. These machines worked by scanning the caps of the capsules and rejecting the capsules that came from third parties without a license. However, the Keurig 2.0 was discontinued in 2019 after backlash from most customers.

So now all the new Keurig models have returned to the original classic system, allowing the use of all kinds of pods.

Difference Between Keurig 1.0 and Keurig 2.0

Both are single-serve coffeemakers that use K-cup pods to brew coffee at the touch of a button.

  • Keurig 2.0 features advanced brew technology that automatically adjusts machine settings (such as required water, optimal brew temperature, and more).
  • Both machines can prepare cups of different sizes. However, you have to manually select the drink size on the Keurig 1.0, while the Keurig 2.0 models automatically adjust the drink size based on the K-Cup used.
  • The Keurig 2.0 models have a larger water reservoir (60-70 oz) than the classic models (48 oz). However, the water tanks of both machines are removable.
  • The Keurig 2.0 offers hot water on demand, while most Keurig 1.0 models do not have this feature.
  • On classic Keurig 1.0 models, three or four default brew sizes are typically available: 6, 8, 10, and 12 ounces. On Keurig 2.0 models, you can program the drink size for each K-Cup pod to your liking.
  • Keurig 2.0 models feature an advanced touchscreen for a modern look. While most of the classic Keurig 1.0 models have a button display.

Advantages of Keurig 2.0 models over Keurig 1.0 models

Here are some of the advantages of the Keurig 2.0 that make it superior to other classic Keurig models.

  1. Hot water on request.
  2. It comes with advanced features and more programmable settings.
  3. Complete control of preparation and functionality.
  4. Larger water tank.
  5. New forms of preparation, such as K-cup portions and K-carafe functionality with exclusive capsules.
  6. It comes with a color touch screen.
  7. friendlier operation

Keurig 2.0 Disadvantages

  1. Not compatible with third party coffee pods.
  2. Keurig 2.0 pods are not widely available.
  3. Very expensive.

Why are the Keurig 2.0 models discontinued?

Keurig announced 2.0 models to combat third-party K-Cup companies and expand their business. But unfortunately, shortly after the launch of the Keurig 2.0 models, the company is facing strong customer backlash and a sharp drop in sales.

In particular, customers were upset that this new system did not support refillable coffee pods and their favorite third-party coffee pods.

The Keurig CEO admits that the introduction of the Brewing System 2.0 was a serious mistake.explains it:

"We were wrong. We underestimated, that's the easiest way to say it. We underestimated the passion consumers have for [My K-Cup]."

Yahoo Finance ColumnistRick Newman points out that Keurig Green Mountain tried to make money using the so-called "razor blade" or "walled garden" method.

"You get a one-time payment for selling the device, and then you get recurring revenue for selling the stuff needed to run the device," he explains. “Everyone would like to have this business model. usually doesn't work.“

Keurig owners decided to expand their business but failed miserably and now they are trying to overcome this failure by offering free reusable coffee pods compatible with Keurig 2.0 models.

You should buy a Keurig 2.0 in 2023

Keurig released the 2.0 models in the fall of 2014, which lasted two to three years, and now Keurig has discontinued the 2.0 series entirely.

Still, you can find the Keurig 2.0 models in local stores or online for a very good price, but I recommend not spending money on them. Because:

Keurig 2.0 models will not work with regular K-cups. Since Keurig has discontinued the 2.0 series, they won't be making pods for the 2.0 series either. Therefore, you will have a very difficult time finding K-Cups.

There are refillable pads, but they don't offer the convenience that K-cups do. And many of us buy single-serve coffee makers for convenience.

As Keurig has completely discontinued this series, it will also not be able to receive support from Keurig.
